How did you know you wanted to be an author? It wasn’t a decision. I always wrote well and was a story-teller. On November 3rd, 1993, at 2:48 PM, I just sat down and started to write a full-length novel.
What is your advice for aspiring authors? If you had to do it again, what would you have done differently? 1) Write about what you DON’T know. Research it.
2) Love editing, rewriting, revising–and editing yet again.
3) Attend writers’ conferences and workshops.
4) Learn the industry. Understand publishing. Know your marketplace.
Do you have any writing rituals or practices? I close my eyes and type along. I let myself into a trans, like in a dream, in which I see the sights, hear the sounds, and smell the smells….
What message do you want readers to remember? The challenge is to tell a story about the human spirit as it rises obove the forces that shape our lives–religious, psychological, geographical, political, or economic…
