Author Showcase Feature with Book Excellence Award Finalist Debra Shiveley Welch
Book Title: spirit Woman
How did you know you wanted to be an author? I have been writing since age nine. A multi-generational poet, I have always enjoyed the beauty and flow, the cadence and flavor of words; I come from a family of story tellers, and the mixture of poetry and imagery woven together into a story has always excited me. I began with poetry, and slowly entered into the world of the essay, short story, and finally the novel. I’ve never looked back.
What is your advice for aspiring authors? If you had to do it again, what would you have done differently? Write for the love of writing; write because you have to, because if you don’t, everything feels off kilter. Write because you can think of nothing else, because of passion for the love of writing.
Do you have any writing rituals or practices? I pretty much approach my writing the way I did homework. I make sure I have everything I need before I get started, because once I sit down to write, I know that it’s going to be all day. I do talk to my characters, and I think of them as if they actually exist.
What message do you want readers to remember? My stories are well thought out and researched. I write for the love of writing and for the love of reading, and I want everyone of my readers to feel that their time was well spent on one of my books. I hope I bring you ease from your cares and take you away for everything for a period of time.
